AWS just hit a number that changes the math on AI

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy revealed in his annual shareholder letter that the AWS AI services business has crossed an annualized revenue run rate of more than $15 billion, growing at triple-digit percentages year over year. He also said the hard part is no longer convincing customers to use it — it is keeping up with demand.

For a small business owner who uses AI to draft emails, answer customer calls, or run a chatbot on the website, a hyperscaler revenue figure may feel like Wall Street noise. It is not. This is the same dynamic that turned cloud storage from a luxury into a $5-a-month commodity. The faster AWS scales its AI business, the cheaper the AI tools small businesses already use are about to get.

What Amazon actually disclosed

Jassy’s shareholder letter and the public commentary around Amazon’s April 30 earnings call put a few hard numbers on a market that has been mostly vibes until now.

AWS has been quietly designing its own chips — Trainium for AI training, Inferentia for inference, Graviton for general workloads — and pushing them into Bedrock and SageMaker as cheaper alternatives to NVIDIA GPUs. That matters for two reasons.

The constraint is supply, not demand

None of those signal a market in trouble. They signal that buyers are still ahead of sellers.

The vendors competing for your subscription dollars are sitting on capacity contracts that will not finish delivering until 2027 and 2028. Their job between now and then is to lock in customers. What this means for the AI tools you actually use

Most small business owners do not buy AI from AWS directly. You pay for QuickBooks with AI features, or a Google Workspace seat with Gemini, or a customer service tool that quietly runs on Anthropic, OpenAI, or AWS Bedrock under the hood. That layer between you and the hyperscaler is where pricing battles get fought.

  1. Voice and phone AI gets cheaper first. Real-time transcription and synthesis are inference-heavy and benefit the most from faster, cheaper chips.   2. Audit your AI bill quarterly. What you paid in January 2026 is not what the same workload should cost by January 2027. Ask vendors what their inference costs are doing — the honest ones will tell you.
  3. Pick tools that are not model-locked. A chatbot that runs only on one provider is one supplier outage from a bad customer experience. Tools that route to whichever model is cheapest and fastest at any given moment will outlive vendor drama.
