Samsung just posted the best quarter in its history

Samsung Electronics reported that its Q1 2026 operating profit jumped roughly eightfold year over year — around a 755% increase — on the back of runaway demand for AI memory chips. Revenue came in near KRW 133 trillion (about $100 billion). Operating profit landed near KRW 57 trillion (about $43 billion), and analysts estimate the semiconductor division produced roughly 95% of that figure.

Those are not normal numbers for Samsung, and they are not normal numbers for the memory business. They are a signal. AI data center spending is not slowing down, and the ripple effects will shape what small businesses pay for AI tools, laptops, phones, and cloud services for the rest of 2026 and well into 2027.

High-bandwidth memory is the new oil

The specific product driving Samsung’s profit surge is high-bandwidth memory (HBM) — the specialized DRAM that sits stacked next to every NVIDIA and AMD GPU running ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and nearly every AI tool small businesses touch.

Samsung’s HBM revenue is expected to triple year over year in the first half of 2026. The company has also qualified its HBM4 chips and started closing the gap with rival SK Hynix, which has dominated HBM sales to NVIDIA for the past two years. For the first time since 2024, Samsung looks like a serious second source.

The semiconductor division is carrying everything

Samsung’s phone business matters less than you might think right now. Chips are carrying the company. The same dynamic played out at Micron’s record $24 billion quarter last month and at NVIDIA’s $68 billion quarter before that. The tier one earnings reports of 2026 are all telling the same story: enterprise AI spending is still accelerating, not cooling.

Why this matters for small businesses

Near-term: AI tool prices stay sticky

When chipmakers are this profitable, it tells you two things. First, hyperscalers — Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta — are still paying up to secure GPUs and memory. Second, the capacity they are buying does not come online fast enough to flood the market with cheap inference.

That is already playing out as the memory chip shortage driving hardware prices up 15-20% across 2026.

Mid-term: competition starts pushing costs down

There is a more hopeful read on Samsung’s earnings. Until recently, SK Hynix had a near-monopoly on HBM3E shipments to NVIDIA. With Samsung catching up on HBM4 and competing for design wins at NVIDIA, AMD, and Broadcom, the memory duopoly is becoming a genuine three-way race. Add Micron to that picture.

Competition in HBM matters because it is the single biggest cost inside an AI server. The faster Samsung closes the gap, the faster per-GPU costs fall. That eventually flows into cheaper inference, cheaper API pricing, and cheaper AI-powered tools for small businesses. The timeline is not weeks — it is quarters — but the direction is set.

The bottom line: Samsung’s eightfold profit jump is not a victory lap for big tech. It is confirmation that the AI buildout is still scaling, and the cost curve for small business AI is going to bend slowly, not overnight.

What is missing from most of the coverage: the gap between the top-line AI narrative and what small business owners actually experience. The Korea Economic Daily and Bloomberg will talk about HBM4 qualification and NVIDIA Blackwell allocations. Those conversations are downstream of questions a contractor in Charleston is asking right now — “Can I afford to add an AI phone answering service this year without cutting somewhere else?” The answer is yes, but only if you choose tools that are built to run efficiently on shared infrastructure, not bespoke GPU clusters.

Two questions the earnings call did not answer:

  • When does the shift from training-driven to inference-driven demand finally reprice the market? Training eats GPUs in massive bursts. Inference is steadier and more sensitive to competition. Most small business AI lives on the inference side.
  • How much of this profit gets reinvested into next-generation capacity versus returned to shareholders? That capital allocation decision shapes how fast supply catches up with demand.

What you should do this quarter

  1. Lock in annual AI tool pricing where you can. If you are using an AI product month-to-month and the vendor offers a 12-month prepay, compare the math. Vendors are under pressure to secure committed revenue, and you are under pressure to manage rising per-seat costs.

  2. Prioritize tools that use smaller, efficient models for the routine work. You do not need GPT-5 or Claude Opus to greet a customer, route a call, or draft a confirmation email. Products that run most interactions on efficient models and reserve the frontier models for hard edge cases will ride out this pricing cycle best.
